Difference Between European and American Roulette

Roulette is probably the most popular betting game of all time. It’s a game of chances, in which a player bets on different numbers and colors and tries to win some money.

The game was invented in 17th century France, and is also called French Roulette or European Roulette, as opposed to the American Roulette.

The game’s name is derived from the French word roulette, meaning ‘wheel’, or ‘little wheel’.

Even though the game was invented in France, it soon started slowly moving to America, ultimately finding its way to Las Vegas. In the United States there is a different version of Roulette, called the American Roulette, and there is a single, but very important difference to it.

The Game’s Setup

European Roulette includes a wheel, a small metal ball and a betting table. The wheel is split into 37 boxes, each representing a single number, from 1 to 36.

These numbers are either in red or in black color, which means there is an equal amount of both red and black fields on the wheel.

You ask yourself, how are there 37 fields, when there are 36 numbers, representing two colors 18 times?

There is also a number 0, represented in green color, and often referred to as the ‘house number’, because it forces a small house edge into the game.

The bets are placed on the table, and players can bet on different numbers, colors, and various combinations. Betting on a color gives you the biggest chance of winning, somewhere slightly under 50 percent. It would be a 50-50 chance, but the green zero on the wheel reduces the chances to slightly below 50 percent.

In fact, the house has a 2.70 percent house edge because of this single green zero spot on the wheel, says Wikipedia.

Once the bets are placed, the dealer spins the wheel and throws in the ball. After a few moments, the ball stops, the wheel stops spinning soon after, and the winners (if any) are announced. After payouts, new bets can be placed.

When it comes to American Roulette, the rules are basically the same, with a slight difference.

It has an additional green color slot, with double zeroes on it. This has helped casinos increase their house edge and make more profits. In return, the players have bigger chances of losing. This form of roulette has no benefits, which is why worldwide; it’s the European version which is preferred.

Unlike the European version, which has 2.70 percent house edge, the American version has a 5.26 percent house edge.

The American version is played only in the United States – people around the world opt for the European version. People in the US only play it because they are fans or encourage this game.

Roulette is a game of chance, and you only win if you are lucky. There is no skill involved – just picking the right number or the right color. You can try both versions of the Roulette game at luckycity.com.

  1. An unfair game for players, and so many like it because it’t only gambling game. I can see that even there are three zeroes or four zeroes on it, people will accept the rules they have lower chance to win.
