Best Games of 2014

Top-2014-PC-Games

As we move into October, the upcoming holiday video game season is just around around the corner. While we’ll see the usual new entries in the Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty franchises, there is a number of quality games I’m very much anticipating across all consoles. Listed below are the top 5 games I’ll be picking up this year. Note: this is my personal list, so while there are other blockbuster titles like Super Smash Bros, Sunset Overdrive, or Far Cry 4 releasing, they aren’t necessarily games I’m interested in.

Hyrule Warriors

I’m a huge Zelda fan, but have very little interest in the Dynasty Warriors series. That said, it’s got Zelda, or at least Hyrule attached to the name, so I will be picking it up. It’s not that I’m not a fan of the Dynasty Warriors games, it’s just that I’ve never really given them a shot. From the little I played of Hyrule Warriors at E3, and from all the gameplay videos I’ve watched, it’s definitely a game I’ll at least play through once.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

One of the biggest suprises at E3 was Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The only way I could descibe this game is just simply, fun. It’s nothing revolutionary, and isn’t going to sell millions of copies, but it was just such an enjoyable experience. It might get overlooked as just a spin-off type game, but I think Nintendo could really do a lot with Cptain Toad. If what I played at E3 is any indication, Captain Toad might be a suprise his this holiday season.

 Destiny

If I took a snapshot of my gaming life 10 years ago, front and center would be Halo 2. I poured 100s of hours into the online multi-player and outside of Halo 3, no other game has ever made me commit more to a single multiplayer experience. Destiny might very well be that game. It’s Bungie and it looks and feels so much like old Halo that it’s got my competitive juices flowing. While I’m still a tad bit skeptical, Destiny is certainly a game I’ll be at least giving a shot.

 Halo: The Master Chief Collection

While I’m hoping that Destiny rejuvenates my old online Halo experience… well, if that doesn’t pan out, I can always just play that same old online Halo experience in the form of the Master Chief Collection. The game will have the original Halo 2 and Halo 3 online multiplayer in its original gameplay format. While I don’t have much interest in the original Halo or Halo 4, seeing gameplay videos of the reimaged Halo 2 multiplayer maps has my hype adreneline going. I’m not sure if it I’ll stick with the game long term or not, but I’m sure there will be some long nights those first few days after I pick this one up.

 Little Big Planet 3

The surpise hit of E3 for me. To put it quite simply, this was the most fun I had of any game I played at E3 and it’s one of the primary reasons why I will be picking up a PS4 in the coming weeks. The four different playable characters all have unique abilities and it’s going to make for one of the best couch-gaming experiences I’ve had in quite a while. While I don’t think it’s going to be a game that I put dozens of hours into, the playability with friends is one of the huge draws for me. It’s definitely a day-one purchase for me.
