How to Inspect a Roof for Damage? – Infographic

Our homes secure us from the elements and ensure that we have a safe place to stay in. The roofs above our heads keep both intense sunlight and rains from hitting us, but this same protection is among the most overlooked when it comes to preventive maintenance.

We tend to be content that we are secure today that we overlook to maintain what is essentially safeguarding us in the first place. We often realize too late that something is wrong when water starts dripping inside the house.

It is unwise to be ignorant of the condition of our roofs for a long time, and inspections should be done at least once a year to prepare for cleaning.

Rain can damage the roof so checking the eaves, overhangs, fascia, gutters for any blockages or debris can prevent future damage and water dripping inside the living room. The attic, ceilings, walls, and the roof interruptions sometimes hide damages and accumulate mold which can deteriorate the overall protection your home offers.

Not all homes use the same roof though so there are other ways to inspect specific roof-types. The three common roof choices are asphalt, metal, and wood, and all three have different ways to manifest damage, which means different inspection methods.

Asphalt roofing results in brittle shingles thanks to both the heat of the sun and the other elements. Debris from brittle shingles can block gutters and cause water damage in the roof.

Metal roofs typically last for about 50 years, but a lot of damages can affect them, which includes pits, rust, and corrosion.

The weather and the overtime deterioration of shingles typically damage wooden roofs. When at least a third of the roofing is damaged, replace the whole roof to ensure protection for your home.

We should not overlook our roofs if we want uninterrupted protection from the elements and if we’re still confused about how to inspect them, All County Exteriors has an infographic to help us.
