The Rise of Biometrics in a Remote Work World

The continuous shift worldwide to remote work setup gave many employees a chance to work in the comfort of their homes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Productivity and job satisfaction increased, and many people accept this as the new normal. Although convenient, it raised a new problem for employers with their cyber and data security. People with illegal intentions have exploited this new system to access confidential records for them to use.

Passwords and PINs have been the most common credentials used to verify an individual. This information became a target for hackers, and countless identity theft and fraud incidents have been filed over the years. This led to employers investing in a more advanced identity verification system designed for a seamless user experience while meeting the demand for security.

The use of face and voice recognition or fingerprints is making its mark in the industry, and more firms are incorporating biometric identification in their security processes. Using a person’s biological data to authenticate into an account has become the go-to for many companies in recent years.

Many industry leaders are investing in FIDO2 multi-factor authentication solutions to reduce the reliance and use of passwords. With this setup, companies will require the employee to undergo levels of identification, combining biometrics with hardware authenticator and account credentials, before they can access their accounts. This high level of security during work hours assures employers that the person working and communicating in their servers is their actual employee, not a hacker who poses as someone from the company.

An increased level of cyber security became a necessity for companies, with most of the world still in a remote working setup. To learn more on how biometrics can help companies achieve a higher level of security, here is an infographic from authID.
